Program Elements

The Shenandoah Field School is a “classic” school — a school that respects the nature of things (including the nature of young men), encompassing and drawing from the classical tradition as well as ancestral traditions particular to our place and time.

  • — Getting faster, stronger, and healthier (mentally no less than physically)

    — Working individually and as a team

  • — Learning tools, materials, safety, and technique, and elements of marketable trade skills

    — Working as a team on a design-build project

    — Creating something of beauty and value, end-to-end

  • — Exploring big questions of meaning, purpose, and "why?" via reading and discussion of mostly canonical works of history, literature, and epic

    — Life skills of basic economy, management, habits, finance and legal 101

Our two complementary programs (Full-Day and PT+) are designed to offer the experience of an integrated and holistic human formation to any young man in the Valley, both those already enrolled at other schools, and those participating in home education or co-ops.

Any boy, two program options

  • Full Program

The Shenandoah Field School's full program concentrates in our three core educational priority areas of physical fitness, building, and human formation, within a micro-school structure designed to:
    1) complement the plethora of other educational avenues which families already have in place (e.g. private tutoring, home schooling, online learning, co-ops, college classes), and
    2) provide framework and structure around which these may be fitted.

To that end, the field school serves as a network hub facilitating connection and cooperation between families and our network of private tutors, as well as the hugely wide range of educational opportunities available in the area, of all varieties.

  • PT+ Program

Drawing from the best of classical whole-person training philosophy and elite military fitness science, the PT+ program presents a unique opportunity for young men to step into a uniquely comprehensive physical training program that will set them on a path for life-long health and excellence, while cultivating mental toughness, disciplined attention to detail, and the ability to work with others. For the total beginner and the seasoned athlete alike, Shenandoah Field School physical training is specifically designed to work for young men in all starting places, and to provide them a supportive and positive team environment which balances intensity and fun to help them to pursue their strongest selves.
